jCareers Open Day:- Opening New Doors: Apprenticeships in Construction (Day 1)

Jhive in collaboration with Galldris and Related Argent, recently hosted an inspiring Open Day, marking our first foray into bridging the gap between the Jewish community and the construction industry. This event was a bold step towards diversifying career choices for our youth, particularly in a sector where our representation has been minimal under 0.5% of the working Jewish population.

Our community is rich in talent and ambition, yet the construction sector has often been overlooked. We aimed to change that narrative by showcasing the vast opportunities this field has to offer. The day was dedicated to school leavers, encompassing those fresh out of school and those returning from gap years, offering them a glimpse into a world of potential careers in construction.

The diversity of our participants was encouraging, with attendees hailing from cross-communal, Central Orthodox, Charedi schools and Chadarim across NW London and Stamford Hill. It was a vibrant reflection of our community’s spectrum, all united by a curiosity to explore opportunities within  construction industry.

Our Open Day was an immersive experience. We took our group to the construction site at Brent Cross Town, where the reality of the industry came to life. There, they met with apprentices working across various disciplines, from groundwork and traffic management to crane operations. This hands-on approach allowed participants to see the tangible impact of their potential work and hear firsthand from those already paving their paths in construction. Participants were also given an overview on careers in site management, project management and quantity surveying.

What stood out was the wide range of entry points into the sector. Whether it was individuals with no qualifications or those with a collection of GCSEs and A-Levels, the construction industry has a place for everyone. It’s about skill, passion, and the drive to build something lasting.

This Open Day was just the beginning. At Jhive, alongside Galldris and Related Argent, we’re committed to not only opening doors but also building new ones. We believe in the potential of our community’s youth to not just navigate but also innovate within the construction sector.

As we reflect on the success of this event, we’re energized to continue this journey, encouraging more young members of the Jewish community to explore and thrive in the construction industry. Here’s to building futures, one brick at a time.

Stay tuned for more updates as we lay the foundation for a more diverse and inclusive future in construction. Together, we’re not just witnessing change; we’re driving it.
